Graduate Program - GPA Requirements
Students are expected to maintain a 3.0 grade point average or above during their first semester of graduate work, and a 3.4 cumulative grade point at the end of the second semester and all semesters thereafter. In determining such grade point averages, incompletes or delayed grades shall be counted as Cs except in continuing research courses such as PS 8085, 8090, 9970 and 9090.
A grade point average for each graduate student shall be computed by the Director of Graduate Studies each semester and furnished to the head of the master's or doctoral committee between the fourth and sixth week of the subsequent semester. In the event that the grade point average falls below these requirements, the Director of Graduate Studies and the chair of the student's advisory committee will determine whether the student should be placed on academic probation and identify what action is necessary to return to the student to good standing. In making this decision, they may consult with faculty members (who may or may not be on the committee) with whom the student has had courses, including those with whom the student had done inferior work, to get a full picture of the student's weaknesses and strengths. At the end of the probationary period, the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the student's doctoral committee shall decide whether the student should be permitted to continue the program. Students should never have more than six hours of incompletes or delayed grades.
