Kate Floros (assistant professor) joined the department in 2008. She holds Ph.D. (2008) and M.A. (2004) degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.A. (1997) degree from Hood College (Frederick, MD). Her subfield is international relations with a research concentration in international and civil conflict.
Research Statement
Her research interests focus on the impact of demographic pressure in both international and civil conflicts. She is most interested in determining how a state’s demographic profile, including its population growth, population density, level of urbanization, age stratification, and refugee population, affects its propensity to engage in international disputes or experience civil conflict. Related research topics of interest include the effects of differential population shifts among rival ethnic groups, the allocation of scarce resources by governments when faced with demographic pressure, and the nexus between demographic pressure and environmental degradation and their combined effect on violent conflict.
