Research Statement
I am continuing to prepare a political biography of the social movement leader in US politics, Aaron Henry, that continues research on political mobilization that first appeared in my 1988 monograph (SUNY Press). I also continue a line of research on political parties in Africa, that have recently appeared in Comparative Politics and the Journal of Modern African Studies.

These general theoretical and practical concerns are being pursued through several kinds of activities:

  • I have current writing projects on these general themes of democratization and participation in African politics in collaboration with: Staffan Lindberg on political clientelism (University of Florida);
  • Collaboration projects with graduate students on the general themes of democratization and participation in African politics are: Dursun Peksen (natural disasters); Rollin Tusalem (blood diamonds); and Kwang-Jin Kim (civil wars).
  • Teaching activity includes general comparative politics of the third word; African politics; African American politics; and, a seminar on social movements and revolutions for seniors
