Evaluation of No Kid Hungry Missouri

Author: Wayne Mayfield

The No Kid Hungry (NKH) national campaign works with communities to feed children. In 2010, Share Our Strength (SOS), a not-for-profit established in 1984 with the mission to end hunger and poverty, started No Kid Hungry.   In 2016, the No Kid Hungry Missouri (NKH Missouri) campaign was launched as a collaborative effort of the State of Missouri, the Family and Community Trust (FACT), and Share our Strength. NKH Missouri is engaged in three primary activities: (1) providing technical assistance and mini-grants to schools and other nonprofit, community-based organizations to bolster local participation in three child nutrition programs offered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) including breakfast, afterschool suppers/snacks, and summer meals/snacks; (2) increasing statewide awareness of child nutrition and food insecurity; and, (3) working with Missouri partners to develop child food insecurity policy in an intentional, statewide fashion.

The MU Institute of Public Policy, under a sub-contract with MU’s Center for Health Policy, is currently evaluating  NKH Missouri.  The proposed multi-method evaluation will:  1) chronicle No Kid Hungry Missouri’s activities and implementation approach to increase participation in USDA Child Nutrition Programs; 2) summarize program participation and reimbursements to schools from 2017 through 2023; and, 3) make recommendations for future state administration of USDA programs.
